General Formatting

  • Font: Use a legible font like Times New Roman, preferably in 12-point size.

  • Spacing: Double-space the entire paper, including quotations, notes, and the works cited page.

  • Margins: Set one-inch margins on all sides of each page.

  • Text Alignment: Align the text to the left and ensure a ragged right edge. Do not justify the text.

  • Indentation: Indent the first line of each paragraph by half an inch from the left margin. Use the Tab key for consistency.

Header and Title

  • Header: Include a header in the upper right-hand corner of each page. This header should contain your last name, followed by a space and the page number.

  • Title Page: MLA format does not require a separate title page unless specified by your instructor. In the top left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor's name, the course name, and the date. Center the title on the following line, and begin your paper on the next line.
